Lucia got the first trailer. Jason got the second — and with it, the other half of GTA VI finally came into focus. Jason Duval is a co-lead, built into the story from the first mission — a man who tried to get out, failed, and is about to be pulled in deeper than ever.
The short version
Jason shares protagonist duties with Lucia Caminos. Their story is the Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic Rockstar has described from the start: two people who have always known the deck is stacked against them, forced to rely on each other more than ever when an easy score goes wrong and leaves them in the middle of a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida. You can switch between Jason and Lucia — including, as the extended gameplay look showed, in the middle of a chase.
A Keys kid who tried to leave
Jason grew up around grifters and crooks in the Leonida Keys. That explains where he starts and why the Keys matter to his half of the map. Spend time with our interactive map and his home ground is the first thing to learn — the island chain at Leonida's southern edge, a long way in spirit from Vice City's neon.
As a teenager he tried a different exit. He did a stint in the Army to shake his troubled teens — an attempt to trade a crooked upbringing for discipline and distance. It did not hold. Back home, he fell in again, working for local drug runners: wanting an easy life, and finding things keep getting harder instead.
The meeting that changes everything
Rockstar's own character summary puts the turn plainly: meeting Lucia could be the best or the worst thing to ever happen to him. Trailer 2, released in May 2025 and captured entirely on a standard PlayStation 5, is where that meeting lands on screen — Jason's life in the Keys on one side, Lucia walking out of Leonida Penitentiary on the other, and the two lives colliding from there.
The official synopsis describes an easy score that goes wrong, and a pair left on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America. Jason's arc starts with reluctance, not ambition — dragged forward by loyalty and circumstance, which is why his partnership with the sharper, more driven Lucia is the engine of the story.
How you actually play as Jason
The August 27 extended look — roughly 27 minutes of in-engine PS5 footage — filled in the practical side. It showed botched jobs and quiet domestic moments between the two leads, seamless character switching, and a relationship system that shapes their bond across the story. Jason is not just who you are in certain missions; how the pair work together is a system, not only a cutscene.
Smaller systems point the same way. Jason and Lucia each carry smartphones, and Rockstar has confirmed radio and on-demand podcasts can keep playing on foot through headphones and earbuds tied to those phones. Our vehicle database also ties a working, lived-in garage to him — including the Vapid Creado listed as his Ranchero-style hero car — the picture of a Keys local, not a tourist passing through.
What we do not know yet
Plenty. Rockstar has not confirmed Jason's full mission structure, how the relationship system rewards or punishes choices, or where his story ends. Anything beyond the beats above is speculation until Rockstar says otherwise, and we label it that way in the newsroom when it appears at all.
What is confirmed is enough to set your first hours: start in the Keys, learn Jason's ground before Vice City swallows the story, and pay attention to the quiet moments as much as the chases. In this game, the partnership is the point — and Jason is half of it. GTA VI launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
